On its surface, this show is an eye-popping celebration of food. But it’s layered in many ways–in meaning, texture, color, context, and more. The simplicity of Bill’s subjects, and his show title, belie the thought processes they evoke. Bill paints in oils and layers his colors, and it’s challenging to convey this through electronic images. There’s a mouthwatering “Green Chile Burger” that strains the edges of the canvas; a feeling of fullness that echoes the real thing. Experience the synthetic blue of the “Breaking Bad Donut,” its sugar shards a jolt to the system. The raw next to the processed–which do you prefer? Bill’s “Still Life with Cantaloupe” turns the Old Masters on their ears. Memento Mori becomes Memento Mangia–no flies on this guy. So, please come meet Bill Pura this evening. Ask him about his inspirations and process. Carpe donut…and we’ll see you tonight!
EXCEPT SUNDAYS.
