Candace’s vessels are available in several sizes,and she’s offering a discount if you bring in your own totem to fill and purchase a vessel.

Michigan-based artist Candace Compton Pappas will be in residence at Shelby House from April 18 through May 2, 2019.
This pop-up show will feature Compton Pappas’ works for sale with the artist in attendance throughout.

Compton Pappas considers herself primarily a painter, although she also creates mixed-media sculpture and assemblage. This April’s show, entitled Vessels: What We Hold, What Holds Us,presents a selection of paintings alongside large and small cement vessels. Compton Pappas invites the community into a conversation with her throughout her two-week pop-up show in Shelby House’s gallery space and front yard.

I have always been a gatherer. I like to take notice of little things, pick them up, and perhaps after a brief study, put them in my pocket. My studio is full of these things. Over time I send some treasures back out into the world – things like feathers and bones. I have made small and large vessels to hold the others. I build what I call “totem vessels,” an assemblage that pays homage to and holds my gatherings. Over the years I have pondered…what is it, this journey of noticing, gathering, and holding? What story does each item tell and how do we become part of this story? This show represents my reflections and imaginings around this journey of embracing, returning and paying homage.
